Nebraska 35 Oregon 32
Tommy Armstrong Jr. accounted for 295 yards and four touchdowns in an impressive 32 to 35 win over Oregon. Armstrong completed 17 of 33 passes for 200 yards and three touchdown, and rushed for an additional 95 yards. Meanwhile Devine Ozigbo rushed for 95 yards on 21 carries. While Nebraska is still working on improving a rush defense that gave up 336 yards to the Ducks, the Cornhusker tandem of Armstrong and Ozigbo can be imposing and allowed Nebraska to win the time of possession battle holding the ball for 35 minutes. This team is going to give Big Ten teams problems. They can match any offense in the conference. If the Huskers can correct a few issues on defense, don’t be surprised if this team finds its way to the Big Ten Championship game.
Iowa 21 North Dakota State 23
The Iowa Hawkeyes entered Saturday’s game without starting offensive linemen Sean Welsh and James Daniels and the Iowa offense looked like it. The Hawkeyes only rushed for 34 yards on 25 carries. It’s pretty hard to beat any team, especially a five time FCS National Title winner, when your offense is one dimensional. North Dakota State coach Chris Klieman expressed his total confidence in his team’s ability to stop the Hawkeyes when he went for a 2 point conversion in the final minutes to win the game. Klieman’s confidence in his team was well founded. The Bison stopped Iowa cold on the ensuing possession to kick the winning field goal. Defensively Iowa also struggled, giving up 239 yards on the ground to the Bison. Watching North Dakota State march the ball down the field was reminiscent of Michigan State’s final drive in their defeat of Iowa in last year’s Big Ten Championship game. That is undoubtedly unsettling for Kirk Ferentz in his quest to get his team back to the conference championship game.
Michigan 45 Colorado 28
The score may imply that Michigan cruised to an easy win, but that wasn’t the case. Colorado QB Sefo Liufau put up 246 yards passing before leaving the game injured just after the start of the second half. The Buffalo’s had Michigan back on its heels until Liufau left the game, after which the Colorado offense was non-existent. If you remove the Maze colored glasses and look through all the hype, you have to be concerned with the lack of a Wolverine running game three contests into the season. Additionally, Liufau was on track to torch the Michigan secondary by almost 500 yards. If that’s not concerning to Harbaugh and the coaches, it should be. Especially given this unranked Colorado team isn’t anything special. Michigan needs to find some answers when Penn State comes to town on Saturday. If not, it could be a long Saturday when Wisconsin comes to Ann Arbor the following week.
